Velika Nedelja through centuries
The history of Velika Nedelja is tightly linked to the arrival of the knights of the German Order – Deutscher Ritterorden – the third and the youngest of all chivalric orders which came to existence as a natural consequence of the crusades launched to free Jerusalem and other sacred sites in Palestine.
The Order’s regulations applied to the chivalry and monasticism. Besides the general vows taken by monks, the knights of the German Order vowed to fight with a sword all non-Christians.
Dynamic social life of Velika Nedelja and its surroundings is shown in the second hall. Between the two wars, various associations were active there: “Peace” – the Catholic Slovene Reading Society, the Eagle Club, the Young Girls’ Club, and St. Mary Society.
