The museum has four workshops whose task is active conservation and restoration and preventive conservation, which means ensuring suitable climatic conditions in the museum’s premises.
In the early 1980s we were the first in Slovenia to set up a textile restoration studio, where we began restoring the precious Brussels tapestries from the early 17th century. Today we also carry out demanding treatments on other historical textiles, such as liturgical textiles, flags, banners, lace and archaeological textiles.
In the wood workshop we care for the rich collection of furniture in the castle, objects of applied art and wooden sculpture. In the metal workshop we conserve and restore archaeological objects, applied art, weapons and armour, and in the workshop for ceramics, glass and stone objects from all departments, most of them archaeological.
In our professional work, priority is given to the museum’s own items, but the workshops occasionally also accept objects kept by other public institutions and private owners.
