Opening of renovated rooms in Ptuj Castle, Tuesday, September 10 2019, 12.00

The sword, sheath and mace of the Ptuj judge are three outstanding items on a European scale that documents the city’s judiciary government from the mid-16th to the end of the 18th century.

The insignia of the Ptuj city judge was officially in use in Ptuj from 1555, when it was commissioned by Ptuj city judge, Jakob Ris, and was in use until 1787 when Emperor Joseph II dismissed all magistrates with a judicial right and the city was granted a mayor. The insignia of the Ptuj city administration, however, were the judge’s mace and a one and half-handed sword, not a weapon in the true meaning of the word but a ceremonial object, that was probably in use until the end of the 19th century.

The insignia of the Ptuj city judges is a valuable and rarely preserved document of the city government and the economic boom of a successful commercial city with an extremely diverse and long history.
